Short answer
The DAFT visa Netherlands offers US citizens is the residence permit for self-employed work in their own business, granted under the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty. You invest at least €4,500 in a sole proprietorship, partnership or BV (€11,250 for an NV), register with the Chamber of Commerce (KVK) and apply to the IND with proof of that capital. The 2026 fee is €423 and Americans need no MVV. The first permit runs for up to 2 years, and each extension for up to 5.
Key facts for 2026
- €4,500 is the minimum capital in a sole proprietorship, partnership or BV; €11,250 in an NV.

The treaty
What the DAFT visa is
The DAFT visa is not a separate visa: it is the IND residence permit for self-employed work, granted to a US citizen under the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty. On the IND application form it is a purpose of its own, next to the Dutch-Japanese Trade Agreement for Japanese nationals (IND form 7524).
- Capital instead of points. For the regular self-employed permit you send documents showing that your company is of essential interest to the Dutch economy, scored on a points system. The DAFT part of the form asks instead for proof of the capital you invested in your company.
- Your own business. You work self-employed, as a sole trader or through a partnership or company that you set up and fund.
- A route to staying. Work as a self-employed person is a non-temporary purpose of residence, so the years count towards permanent residence (IND).

Requirements
DAFT visa Netherlands requirements in 2026
You need US nationality, a business registered in the Netherlands and at least €4,500 of capital invested in it (IND form 7535). The money stays in your business: it is capital, not a fee or a deposit paid to the government.
| Business form | Minimum capital | Proof of the capital |
|---|---|---|
| Sole proprietorship (eenmanszaak) | €4,500 | A business bank statement showing the invested amount, and an opening balance sheet |
| General or limited partnership (VOF, CV) | €4,500 | The deed of formation or a contract showing each partner’s share, the opening balance and a business bank statement |
| Private limited company (BV) | €4,500 | The deed of incorporation, the opening balance and a business bank statement |
| Public limited company (NV) | €11,250 | The deed of incorporation, the opening balance and a business bank statement |

- Chamber of Commerce. Proof of registration no older than 3 months, or your KVK number on the form.
- Checked figures. An authorised independent external expert, such as a chartered accountant, bookkeeper or financial advisor, must check the financial documents you send.
- The bank statement must show the name of the company and the capital invested.
- Identity. You give your fingerprints and a passport photo, and fill in the antecedents certificate.
Your business
What kind of business works under DAFT
DAFT fits a real business that you run at your own expense and risk, such as a consultancy, a design studio or freelance work for several clients. Most freelancers register as a sole proprietorship or a BV (Business.gov.nl).
- Several clients, your own terms. A freelancer works for different clients without an employment contract and pays tax through their own return (KVK).
- Watch for false self-employment. If you cannot decide yourself when or how you do the work, you may in fact be an employee. The Tax Administration has checked this since 1 January 2025 (Business.gov.nl).
- Regulated professions. You need no separate qualification to set up a business, but some professions have their own requirements.
- One client who directs your work? That looks like a job, and this permit is for self-employed work. Get advice before you build your move on it.

Applying
How to apply for a DAFT visa, step by step
Set up and fund the business first, then apply to the IND with the proof. US citizens do not need an MVV (IND MVV exemptions), so you can apply in the Netherlands with the written form.
- Register your business with KVK. You pay a one-time fee, and KVK passes your details to the Tax Administration, which usually posts your VAT numbers within 2 weeks. For a BV, the notary registers the company.
- Open a Dutch business bank account and invest the capital: at least €4,500, or €11,250 for an NV.
- Have the opening balance sheet and bank statement checked by an authorised independent expert.
- Apply to the IND with form 7524: the KVK proof, the capital documents and the antecedents certificate.
- Pay €423. The IND has 90 days to decide (IND fees, IND decision periods).
- Collect your residence document in person, at the place named in the IND letter (IND).

Tax
Taxes: VAT, income tax and the 30% ruling
You register with KVK and the Tax Administration (Belastingdienst), and nearly every self-employed professional pays VAT and income tax (Business.gov.nl).
- VAT. The rates are 0%, 9% and 21%. With turnover under €20,000 a year you can apply for the small businesses scheme (KOR) and file no VAT returns, but then you cannot reclaim VAT you paid.
- Income tax. A sole proprietor files an income tax return; a BV files a corporate tax return.
- Set money aside. When you set your hourly rate, business.gov.nl advises reserving 30% for taxes.
- No 30% ruling. The expat scheme is for employees hired from abroad, and its first condition is salaried employment with the company (Business.gov.nl). Self-employed income does not qualify.
Renewal
DAFT visa renewal: 2 years, then 5
A first permit for self-employed work runs for at most 2 years, and each extension for at most 5 years (Aliens Decree 2000, article 3.58).
- When to apply. Once your permit expires within 3 months; the IND disregards an earlier application. Apply before the permit ends, and never later than 4 weeks after, to avoid a gap in your residence (IND).
- Show the capital is still there. Send the (interim) balance sheet and profit and loss account for the current and previous financial year, audited by an authorised external expert. A bank statement is not enough (IND form 7535).
- Fee: €423 for the extension in 2026.
- Why timing matters: a residence gap delays permanent residence and Dutch citizenship. Our visa extension guide walks through the application.
Family
Bringing your spouse and children
Your partner and children can apply for a residence permit to live with you as your family members.
- Income. If they apply together with your own self-employed application, the IND looks at your expected income, which must be evident from your business plan (IND). Our partner visa guide sets out the income rules.
- Fees in 2026: €254 for a partner and €85 for a child under 18 (IND fees).
- Their stay counts too. Living with a family member who holds a permit for a non-temporary purpose, such as self-employed work, is itself a non-temporary purpose (IND).
Staying for good
From DAFT to permanent residence and a Dutch passport
After 5 consecutive years on a valid residence permit you can usually apply for permanent residence, because self-employed work is a non-temporary purpose (IND).
- Also required: your main residence in the Netherlands for the whole period, extensions always made on time, enough income, registration in the Basisregistratie Personen (BRP) and the civic integration exam at level A2, unless you are exempt.
- No end date. The permanent residence permit does not expire; its document is renewed every 5 years.
- Next steps. Our permanent residence guide covers the application, and our Dutch citizenship guide the passport.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is the DAFT visa?
The DAFT visa is the Dutch residence permit for US citizens who work self-employed under the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty. Instead of scoring points for an essential Dutch interest, you show that you invested capital in your own Dutch business: at least €4,500, or €11,250 for an NV. You register with the Chamber of Commerce, apply to the IND and pay €423 in 2026.
How much money do I need for a DAFT application?
At least €4,500 invested in a sole proprietorship, partnership or BV, or €11,250 in an NV. It must show on a business bank statement and an opening balance sheet checked by an independent expert, such as an accountant. On top come the €423 IND fee, the one-time Chamber of Commerce registration fee and the cost of that expert.
Do Americans need an MVV to apply?
No. The United States is on the IND list of nationalities that do not need an MVV, the provisional residence permit. You can come to the Netherlands and apply for the residence permit here with the written form for self-employed work. You still give fingerprints and a photo, and you collect the residence document in person.
How long is a DAFT residence permit valid?
A first residence permit for self-employed work is granted for at most 2 years. After that, each extension can run for up to 5 years. You can apply to extend once the permit expires within 3 months, and you must show with audited accounts that the capital you invested is still in the business; a bank statement is not enough.
Can I freelance for several clients on a DAFT visa?
Yes, if you really work as an independent entrepreneur. A freelancer works for different clients, without an employment contract, and pays tax through their own return. If one client decides when and how you work, it may count as employment: the Tax Administration has checked for false self-employment since 1 January 2025.
Does the 30% ruling apply to DAFT entrepreneurs?
No. The expat scheme, formerly the 30% ruling, is a tax advantage for employees hired from abroad with specific expertise, and the employee must be in salaried employment with the company. As a sole proprietor you pay income tax on your profit instead, and business.gov.nl advises reserving 30% of your rate for taxes.
Can my spouse and children join me?
Yes. They apply for a residence permit as your family members. In 2026 the IND fee is €254 for a partner and €85 for a child under 18. If they apply together with your own application, the IND judges your expected income from your business plan, so the plan should show enough income for the whole family.
Can the DAFT visa lead to permanent residence?
Yes. Self-employed work is a non-temporary purpose of residence, so after 5 consecutive years with a valid permit you can apply for permanent residence. You also need your main residence here throughout, extensions made on time, enough income and the civic integration exam at level A2 or an exemption. The IND has 6 months to decide.
