UAE residents

UAE residents: applying for a Schengen visa in Abu Dhabi or Dubai

If your nationality needs a visa, you apply at VFS Global in Abu Dhabi or Dubai, where residents of Afghanistan apply too (Netherlands Worldwide).

Proof that you live in the UAE: for instance a residence permit valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area, a visa or a work permit. Someone who is not a resident must show why they cannot apply at home (checklist).
Ties and money: if you are employed, a recent employer statement with your job title, contract duration and salary, plus bank statements or payslips from the previous 3 months. Paying for the trip yourself? Add bank statements for the previous 3 months and, if employed, 3 recent payslips.
Booking: book the appointment yourself, not through an intermediary, one per person, and appear in person, even if you are under 18.
Fees: €90 for adults, €45 for children aged 6 to 11 and nothing under 6, payable in cash in dirham or by credit card, charged in euros (fees).

Long stay

Moving to the Netherlands from the UAE: MVV, TB test and family

A stay of more than 90 days needs a residence permit, and your sponsor in the Netherlands usually submits the application (IND).

Emiratis: the UAE is not on the IND list of MVV-exempt nationalities (IND), but the United Arab Emirates is on the appendix of nationalities that do not have to take a TB test (appendix).
Joining a partner: before the MVV, a partner passes the civic integration exam abroad, unless the nationality is on the exemption list, which the UAE is not (IND).

Work, tax and the 30% ruling for Dubai-based professionals

With a Dutch job offer, the usual route is the highly skilled migrant (kennismigrant) permit, and your employer must be a sponsor recognised by the IND (IND brochure).

Salary thresholds in 2026: €5,942 gross a month at 30 or over, €4,357 under 30 (IND). The permit fee is €423 (IND fees).

Documents from the UAE: two legalisation steps

A document from the United Arab Emirates must first be legalised by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then by the Dutch consulate-general in Dubai (Netherlands Worldwide).

In English: no translation needed; you follow the two legalisation steps.
In Arabic: first a sworn translation into Dutch, English, French or German, then both steps.
At the consulate-general: you do not need an appointment to have a document legalised.
Driving: a UAE licence is valid for the first 185 days after you move (RDW), and the UAE is not on the list of licences that can be exchanged (RDW). With the 30% ruling, the RDW asks for that tax decision in an exchange of a licence from outside the EU/EFTA (RDW, in Dutch).

Collecting the MVV in Dubai, step by step

For a long stay, the IND decides in the Netherlands and you collect the MVV sticker at the Dutch consulate-general in Dubai.

Wait for the IND letter You can only apply for the MVV sticker at the Dutch consulate-general in Dubai if the IND letter says so. Our visa application guide lists what the sponsor sends first.
Book online within 3 months Make the appointment online; you have 3 months after the letter (Netherlands Worldwide).
Bring the documents Your passport, valid for 6 more months with 2 empty pages, and a copy of the photo page; a passport photo that meets Dutch requirements; a copy of the IND letter with your V number; and the documents that letter lists.

Register and insure Register in person with your municipality within 5 days of arriving (Netherlands Worldwide), and take out Dutch health insurance no later than 4 months after arriving (Government.nl).
