Short answer
Moving to the Netherlands from the US starts from a good position: Americans need no visa for visits of up to 90 days, no MVV entry visa and no TB test. For a longer stay you still need a residence permit for your purpose, such as a job with a recognised sponsor, the DAFT permit for your own business with at least €4,500 in capital, study or family. Once you are in the Netherlands with the IND confirmation of receipt, you book your photo and fingerprints at an IND desk. Your US tax filing continues from abroad.
Key facts for 2026
- 90 days in any 180-day period is how long Americans can visit the Schengen area without a visa.
- €4,500 is the minimum DAFT capital in a sole proprietorship, partnership or BV; €11,250 in an NV.
- €423 is the 2026 IND fee for a DAFT or highly skilled migrant permit.
- €5,942 gross a month is the 2026 salary threshold for a highly skilled migrant aged 30 or over.
- $10,000 in total foreign accounts at any time in the year means filing the FBAR.
- 4 months after arriving is your deadline to take out Dutch health insurance.
- 185 days is how long your US driving licence stays valid after you move.

Moving to the Netherlands from the US: what applies to Americans
US citizens skip three steps most non-EU nationals face: the short-stay visa, the MVV and the TB test. The United States is on the EU list of countries whose nationals need no visa for short stays (EU visa regulation, Annex II).
| Your situation | What applies to US citizens | Source |
|---|---|---|
| A visit of up to 90 days | No visa needed | EU regulation |
| A stay of more than 90 days | A residence permit for your purpose; your sponsor in the Netherlands usually applies | IND |
| The MVV entry visa | Not needed: the United States is on the exemption list | IND |
| The TB test | Not needed: the United States of America is on the exemption appendix | IND |
| The civic integration exam abroad | Not needed: US citizens are exempt | IND |
| Your US driving licence | Valid for 185 days after you move; not on the exchange list | RDW |
Our Netherlands visa guide compares every route, and our residence permit guide explains the permit types.
Your own business
The DAFT permit: self-employed under the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty
The Dutch-American Friendship Treaty gives US nationals a residence permit for their own business, based on a capital investment. The IND form for self-employed work lists it next to the Dutch-Japanese Trade Agreement, which gives Japanese nationals a similar route (IND form 7524). Moving from Canada instead? DAFT is not open to Canadians, but the working holiday permit is. See our guide to the Netherlands visa from Canada for the routes that apply.
- Capital: at least €4,500 in a sole proprietorship, general partnership, limited partnership or BV, and at least €11,250 in an NV (IND form 7535).
- Fee: €423 in 2026, the same as for other self-employed work (IND fees).
- How long: a first permit for self-employed work runs for at most 2 years, and each extension for at most 5 years (Aliens Decree, article 3.58).
- More detail: our DAFT visa guide walks through the documents, the business plan and the extension.
Work
Working for a Dutch employer: highly skilled migrant and the 30% ruling
With a job offer, the usual route is the highly skilled migrant (kennismigrant) permit, and your employer must be a sponsor recognised by the IND (IND brochure).
- Salary thresholds in 2026: €5,942 gross a month at 30 or over, and €4,357 under 30 (IND). The permit fee is €423. Our highly skilled migrant guide explains the procedure.
- The 30% ruling needs, among other conditions, that you lived more than 150 km from the Dutch border for more than 16 of the 24 months before your first working day, and a salary above €48,013 in 2026 (Belastingdienst). Test your case with our 30% ruling checker.

United States
Only for Americans: US taxes, Social Security, Medicare and your licence
Moving does not end your US obligations: the IRS still expects a return, and Medicare mostly stops at the border. Americans who later naturalise usually have to renounce US citizenship unless an exemption applies; our dual citizenship Netherlands guide lists them.
- US tax returns continue. A US citizen or resident living outside the United States generally files income, estate and gift tax returns and pays estimated tax the same way as people in the US (IRS).
- FBAR and Form 8938. Foreign accounts go on the FBAR when their total value exceeds $10,000 at any time in the year. Living outside the US, Form 8938 applies above $200,000 at the end of the year or $300,000 at any time, or $400,000 and $600,000 when married filing jointly (IRS).
- The tax treaty. The Netherlands and the United States have an income tax treaty (wetten.nl). A tax adviser who knows both systems can tell you how it applies to you; this guide gives no tax advice.
- Social Security. The SVB lists the United States of America among its treaty countries (SVB). Under the agreement, self-employed people who live in the Netherlands are covered by the Dutch system, and a certificate of coverage, form NL/USA 101, establishes an exemption from US contributions (SSA).
- Medicare stays behind. Medicare usually does not cover health care outside the US (Medicare). In the Netherlands you must take out Dutch health insurance no later than 4 months after arriving, even if you have insurance from another country (Government.nl).
- Your driving licence. A US licence is valid for the first 185 days after you move (RDW). The RDW names a licence from America as an example of one that cannot be exchanged (RDW); with the 30% ruling it asks for that tax decision when you exchange a licence from outside the EU/EFTA, so check with your municipality (RDW, in Dutch).
Step by step
Moving from the US, step by step

- Pay within 2 weeks With a paper application, the IND sends a letter asking you to pay the fee, and you must pay within 2 weeks (IND).

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa for moving to the Netherlands from the US?
Not for a visit: US citizens can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. To live, work or study in the Netherlands for longer, you need a residence permit for that purpose. You do not need an MVV entry visa first, so once you are in the Netherlands with the confirmation of receipt, you book your photo and fingerprints at an IND desk.
What is the DAFT visa, and who can use it?
DAFT is the residence permit for self-employed work under the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty, for US nationals. You invest at least €4,500 in a sole proprietorship, partnership or BV, or €11,250 in an NV. The 2026 IND fee is €423. A first permit for self-employed work runs for up to 2 years, and each extension for up to 5.
Do Americans need a TB test or a civic integration exam?
No. The United States of America is on the IND appendix of nationalities exempt from the TB test, and US citizens are also exempt from the civic integration exam abroad. The MVV entry visa is not required either. You still need the residence permit itself, and to meet the other requirements for your purpose, such as income or a sponsor.
Do I still file US taxes after moving to the Netherlands?
Generally yes. The IRS says US citizens and residents living outside the United States file income, estate and gift tax returns and pay estimated tax in the same way as people in the US. Foreign accounts worth more than $10,000 in total go on the FBAR. A tax adviser who knows both systems can check how the treaty applies to you.
Can I drive in the Netherlands with a US driving licence?
Yes, for the first 185 days after you move, if the licence is valid. The RDW uses a licence from America as its example of one that cannot be exchanged, so after that you need a Dutch licence. If you have the 30% ruling, the RDW asks for that tax decision in an exchange of a licence from outside the EU, so ask your municipality.
Does Medicare cover me in the Netherlands?
Usually not: Medicare generally does not cover health care outside the US, apart from some exceptions. As a resident you must take out Dutch health insurance no later than 4 months after arriving, even if you keep an insurance policy from another country. If you take it out after 4 months, you are not insured retroactively.
What salary do I need to work in the Netherlands as an American?
For a highly skilled migrant permit in 2026, an IND-recognised sponsor must pay at least €5,942 gross a month if you are 30 or over, or €4,357 if you are younger. For the 30% ruling the salary must be above €48,013 in 2026, among other conditions. DAFT works differently: it needs at least €4,500 invested in your business.
Will I pay Social Security in both countries?
The United States and the Netherlands have a social security agreement. Employers and self-employed workers request a certificate of coverage, form NL/USA 101, to establish an exemption from US contributions, and self-employed people who live in the Netherlands are covered by the Dutch system. Check your situation with the SVB or the SSA first.
