Short answer
Working in Utrecht in 2026 means joining one of the tightest job markets in the country: UWV counts 5.5 times as many vacancies as short-term jobseekers in the Midden-Utrecht region. Many contracts here are fixed-term, so know the chain rule and the one-month renewal notice before your contract runs out. If the job ends, apply for WW within a week, act within 2 months if you want to challenge a dismissal in court, and on a highly skilled migrant permit look for a new sponsor straight away.
Key facts for 2026
- 30,350 vacancies were open on average in Midden-Utrecht in the first half of 2025.

- 76.0% of people aged 15 to 75 in the region had work in 2024, up from 69.9% in 2015.

- Where the jobs grow. UWV expects more jobs in construction, care and welfare, and specialist business services, and fewer in agency work, industry and wholesale (UWV).
- Freelancing. Self-employed jobs are expected to fall because the Tax Administration checks harder for false self-employment (UWV); read our freelancing and DBA guide before you set up as a contractor.
- Your pay. Every employee of 21 or older earns at least €14.99 gross an hour from 1 July 2026 (Rijksoverheid); our salary calculator shows what you keep and the average salary guide how you compare.
Employers
Employers in Utrecht that can sponsor you
From outside the EU you need an employer on the IND register of recognised sponsors, and Utrecht’s university, hospital and university of applied sciences are on it.
The register lists Universiteit Utrecht, Universitair Medisch Centrum Utrecht and Hogeschool Utrecht, alongside entries such as Rabobank U.A., ASR Nederland N.V., NS Groep N.V., Bol.com B.V., Jaarbeurs B.V. and Genmab B.V. (IND register). It gives names and Chamber of Commerce numbers, not where each employer hires, so check every vacancy; our sponsorship jobs guide explains how to search it.
| 2026 gross monthly salary threshold | Amount |
|---|---|
| Highly skilled migrant, 30 or older | €5,942 |
| Highly skilled migrant, under 30 | €4,357 |
- The thresholds come from the IND (IND); the route is in our highly skilled migrant visa guide.
- Local help. The Utrecht International Center runs a job portal with vacancies for internationals and, through its Work in NL information point, informs labour migrants about their rights (Utrecht International Center). Contracts
Fixed-term contracts in Utrecht: the chain rule and the renewal notice
In a city built on education, care and services, many first contracts are fixed-term, and two rules decide what happens when one ends.
- The chain rule (ketenregeling). Your contract becomes permanent automatically after more than 3 fixed-term contracts with the same employer, or after more than 3 years of consecutive fixed-term work, as long as the gaps between contracts were at most 6 months. A collective agreement can set different rules and then prevails, and some roles are excluded, such as a stand-in for a sick primary school teacher (Rijksoverheid).
- Coming change. The Senate approved the Act on more certainty for flexible workers on 7 July 2026; from 1 January 2028 people on flexible contracts get more certainty about their income and working hours (Rijksoverheid).
- The renewal notice (aanzegtermijn). For a fixed-term contract of 6 months or longer, your employer must tell you in writing, at least 1 month before the end, whether it continues and on what terms. Without that notice the employer owes you 1 month’s salary, and a proportional amount if the notice is late (Rijksoverheid).
- Not renewed? You are also entitled to the transition payment when a fixed-term contract is not extended (Rijksoverheid). Our notice period guide and employment contract guide cover the details.

Dismissal
Dismissed in Utrecht: the first steps and the deadlines
When a job in Utrecht ends, the benefit, the payment and any permit each run on their own clock.
- Read before you sign An exit deal (vaststellingsovereenkomst) fixes your end date, payment and WW position; start with our settlement agreement guide.
- Apply for WW on time Wait more than a week after becoming unemployed and UWV will probably pay less or nothing for a while (UWV).

- Watch the court deadlines Asking the kantonrechter to annul a dismissal or award fair compensation must happen within 2 months after the contract ended; a transition payment claim within 3 months (Civil Code 7:686a). See our 2-month deadline guide.
- On a permit, start searching The IND gives 3 months, or up to 6 months after 2 years on the permit, from the day the contract was dissolved and never beyond the permit’s expiry (IND); read what happens to your permit.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is it easy to find work when working in Utrecht is the plan?
The market favours job seekers: UWV counts 5.5 times as many vacancies as short-term jobseekers in Midden-Utrecht, with 30,350 vacancies on average in the first half of 2025. Jobs keep growing in construction, care and specialist business services. From outside the EU you still need an employer that is a recognised sponsor and pays the IND salary threshold.
When does a fixed-term contract in Utrecht become permanent?
Automatically once you have had more than 3 fixed-term contracts with the same employer, or have worked on fixed-term contracts for longer than 3 years in a row, provided there was no gap of more than 6 months. A collective agreement can set other rules and then takes priority, and some jobs, such as replacing a sick primary school teacher, are excluded.
My fixed-term contract ends. Must my employer tell me in advance?
Yes, if the contract lasted 6 months or longer. At least 1 month before it ends, your employer must tell you in writing whether it will continue and on what terms. If the employer says nothing, it owes you 1 month’s salary; if it is late, a proportional amount. When the contract is not renewed, you are normally also entitled to a transition payment.
How long can I stay after losing a highly skilled migrant job in Utrecht?
If you are not to blame, the IND generally gives you 3 months to find a new recognised sponsor, or up to 6 months if you have held your permit for 2 years or more. The search period starts on the day your contract was dissolved and can never run past the expiry date of your residence permit, so start looking at once.
Where are employment cases from Utrecht heard?
By the sub-district judge of Rechtbank Midden-Nederland, which hears employment cases for the Utrecht region at Vrouwe Justitiaplein 1, a short walk from Utrecht Centraal. A request to annul a dismissal or for fair compensation must be filed within 2 months after the contract ended, and a claim about the transition payment within 3 months.
Is there a free employment lawyer consultation in Utrecht?
FindLawyer is free to start: you tell us what happened, and we then match you with an English-speaking Dutch employment lawyer for a non-renewal, a dismissal, a settlement agreement or a permit at risk. The lawyer’s fees are explained before you go ahead, and on a low income you may qualify for subsidised legal aid.
