The university, the LUMC and many science employers start people on temporary contracts, so learn the chain rule and check your collective agreement. Employers in the region can get free advice on hiring internationals from Leiden International Centre, and employees can start for free with FindLawyer, which is based in Leiden.

Job market
Working in Leiden: the Holland Rijnland job market in 2026
Leiden sits in one of the tightest labour market regions UWV measures, which gives employees room to negotiate.
| UWV region Holland Rijnland | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Average vacancies, first half of 2025 | 11,300 | UWV |
| Vacancies per short-term jobseeker | almost 4 | UWV |
| Expected job growth, 2024 to 2027 | 1.0% | UWV |
- Where the jobs are. UWV expects jobs to keep growing in care and welfare and in specialist business services, and to shrink in wholesale and agency work; self-employed jobs fall as the Tax Administration checks harder for false self-employment (UWV). Freelancing? See our DBA guide.
- Your contract. Our employment contract guide explains the types.
Sponsors
Sponsors and free advice for Leiden employees and employers
Leiden’s academic and science employers are well represented on the IND sponsor register, and employers in the region can get free advice on hiring from abroad.
The register includes Universiteit Leiden, Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum (LUMC), Stichting Hogeschool Leiden, Stichting Naturalis Biodiversity Center and Leiden Cryogenics B.V. (IND register). It shows names, not work locations, so check each vacancy with our sponsorship jobs guide.
| 2026 gross monthly salary threshold | Amount |
|---|---|
| Highly skilled migrant, 30 or older | €5,942 |
| Highly skilled migrant, under 30 | €4,357 |
| After an orientation year (reduced criterion) | €3,122 |
- The rates. Source: IND. From 1 July 2026 every employee aged 21 or over earns at least €14.99 gross an hour (Rijksoverheid).
- Free consultations for employers. Leiden International Centre advises employers based in the Leiden region that have, or want to hire, international employees, online or in person, free of charge (LIC).
- Before the first payslip. A newcomer without a home yet may register at a Leiden, Leiderdorp or Voorschoten employer’s address for 3 months through LIC (LIC); see IND and registration in Leiden and, for housing, renting in Leiden.
Contracts
Temporary contracts in Leiden: chains, probation and non-competes
Research, education and science companies often hire on temporary contracts, and some add confidentiality or non-compete clauses.
| Rule | What it means | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Chain of temporary contracts | Permanent after more than 3 contracts, or more than 3 years of them, with gaps of at most 6 months; the cao can differ. | Rijksoverheid |
| Probation (proeftijd) | At most 1 month on a temporary contract under 2 years, at most 2 months on 2 years or longer or permanent, none on 6 months or less. | Rijksoverheid |
| Non-compete in a temporary contract | Not allowed, unless the contract explains the weighty business interest; without that explanation the clause is void. | Rijksoverheid |
- The cao first. Agreements in your collective labour agreement take precedence over the chain rule (Rijksoverheid), so read yours.
- From 2028. The Senate approved the Act on more security for flexible workers on 7 July 2026; from 1 January 2028 people on flexible contracts get more certainty about income and working hours (Rijksoverheid).
- Non-competes may change. A bill would limit a clause to 1 year, require the area to be named and make the employer pay compensation; it is not law yet (Rijksoverheid). See our non-compete guide.

Dismissal
Dismissed in Leiden: WW, transition payment, court and permit
Losing a Leiden job starts several clocks at once, and the first one runs out after only a week.
- Do not sign the exit deal straight away A settlement agreement (vaststellingsovereenkomst) fixes the end date, the payment and your WW position; read our settlement agreement guide first.
- Apply for WW in time Out of work for more than a week when you apply? UWV will probably pay less, or nothing, for a while (UWV).
- Check the transition payment 1/3 of a monthly salary for each full year, to a 2026 maximum of €102,000 gross or one annual salary if that is higher (Rijksoverheid), also when a temporary contract is not renewed (Rijksoverheid). Use our calculator.
- Mind the court deadlines 2 months after the end of the contract to ask the kantonrechter to annul a notice or award fair compensation, 3 months for a transition payment claim (Civil Code 7:686a); see our 2-month deadline guide.
- On a permit, count the search period 3 months to find a new recognised sponsor if you are not to blame, up to 6 months after 2 years on the permit, from the day the contract ended and never beyond the permit’s end (IND); see losing your job on a permit.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What should I know about working in Leiden?
The regional market is tight, with almost 4 times as many vacancies as short-term jobseekers in Holland Rijnland. Big international employers include Universiteit Leiden, the LUMC and Naturalis, all recognised IND sponsors. Temporary contracts are common, so know the chain rule, and read any non-compete clause before you sign.
Are there free consultations for employers in Leiden?
Yes. Leiden International Centre offers free consultations to employers in the Leiden region that employ, or want to hire, international staff, online or in person, to help with the bureaucracy involved. Its helpdesk for internationals is free too. For a legal dispute with an employee or employer, a lawyer is the right next step.
When does a temporary contract in Leiden become permanent?
After more than 3 temporary contracts with the same employer, or more than 3 years of them in a row, with no more than 6 months between contracts, the contract becomes permanent automatically. Your collective agreement can set different rules, so check it, especially in research and education jobs.
How long can I stay after losing a highly skilled migrant job in Leiden?
Usually 3 months to find another recognised sponsor if the job loss was not your fault, and up to 6 months once you have held your permit for 2 years or more. The search period begins on the day your contract ended and cannot run past the expiry date of your residence permit.
How long do I have to challenge a dismissal from a Leiden job?
A request to the kantonrechter to annul a notice of dismissal, or to award fair compensation, expires 2 months after the contract ended; a claim for an unpaid transition payment can be made within 3 months. Rechtbank Den Haag has a location in Leiden at Witte Singel 1. Get advice early.
